I have been racing in South Australia since 2007. I had been doing regular ride days when a Cafe Racer member came over and had a chat to me, convincing me to buy a race fairing and give Brackets a go. I was instantly hooked. I had thought ride days were great but racing was just something else. After winning Brackets in 2008 I moved to the Superbike class with my 2001 GSX-R 1000. Over the next 2 years I won several trophys for my class 'C grade'. I also tried new tracks, Wakefield park, Philip Island and my favorite track McNamara park. Here is where I found I liked tracks with trees, constant undulations that really test your riding skill, meager run off and lots of laps. Mac Park as we call it had long races by club standards, sometimes 20 or more laps.
I am a BMW motorcycle technician so when in 2010 the BMW S1000RR came out I bought one to race. Unfortunately being a completely new model and not many people riding them it took me a bit of time to get it sorted. That was when I picked up my first sponsor, he saw my potential at one of the race meetings and asked me what I needed to improve my results. He helped me financially to get the chassis and suspension sorted by 2013. I raced Eastern Creek, Philip Island, Mac Park and Mallala. 2013 was the year I started to get serious about racing. The bike worked well now, I was running with the faster group of riders and winning my class. In 2013 I also joined the Cafe Racer Club committee and started running ride days at Mallala. This is where I became involved with Brian Rosser - the builder of the Ducati 650 Royce rode last year.
At Philip Island with the BMW coming 7th in superbikes and 2nd in BEARS. It was here that my partner and I decided that 2014 was the time to race the whole national Pirelli Road Race series run by Preston mcc. Four rounds over 3 tracks - 2 rounds at a track I hadn't ridden yet ( Broadford).
I won the BEARS(British, European and American Race Series) TT series and was 8th in Superbikes. A good result considering the competition. In 2014 I also raced the Adelaide 3 hour coming 1st for class and 2nd over the line. At this time Brian was moving from developing just his 696 Ducati to also having an 800, 1000 and the Manx 650 version. As a colleague of Brian's development rider Howard Sabey and with my riding ability strengthening I was privileged enough to become part of the team and do some test days and race meetings on the Ducati's.
2015 I raced my favourite track Mac Park, winning 1000's in October. Had some great racing early in the year on the Ducati against a Moto 3 KTM ridden by Olly Simpson. Did the Adelaide 3 hour again but due to an unfortunate incident we only finished 7th. This was a race with names like Steve Martin, Dave Johnson, Josh Waters, Daniel Falzon. Big names in Australian racing and we were holding our own.
So far in 2016 my team won the 6 hour scooter race that takes place at McNamara Park and I won BEARS at Easter cup.
Each year since 2007 I have raced 6 to 10 meetings a year. Ridden tracks across the country, Queensland Raceway, Wakefield Park, Sydney Motorsport park, Philip Island, Broadford, Mac Park and Mallala. I particularly enjoy the endurance races like Adelaide 3 hour, Master of Mac Park, the Pirelli TT series and Scooter 6 hour.
In 2015 Rowe Racing competed in the Manx GP achieving very good results. They asked if I'd like to join the team for the 2016 race and I have jumped at the opportunity to be a part of it. Hence starting this Blog so I can share that experience with anyone interested.
